Margaret Mueller, 45, became president and CEO of the 108-year-old Executives' Club of Chicago in January. She was founding president of CarbonSix, which is now part of marketing/research firm Shapiro + Raj in River North, where she was president until June 2018. Mueller lives in Lakeview with her husband and their twin 4-year-old sons. What sparked your entrepreneurial spirit? My dad ran his own auto mechanic shop, and both of my brothers launched startups. The value of hard work and discipline was instilled in me at a young age.How young? My mother died when I was 11, so I had to grow up fast. I did the grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning and laundry for my father and me.
I was in the Honors Society and participated in multiple sports. Being 'adultified' so young served me well. How so?In growing my own business, I had to learn early on how to sit around a table with people senior to me and get on their level pretty quickly.Worst investment you have made?Being a cooperative share owner in a local wine bar that didn't survive. It was an emotional decision. It was in the neighborhood; I always loved going there and wanted to be a part of it without doing enough due diligence. If I had spent more time analyzing the opportunity, I could have found other ways to participate without throwing money into an untenable minority-owner situation.Your top goal for the Executives' Club?We need to do a better job of touting the major events we host. I want every business leader in Chicago to know that to build your business, you need to join the club.Who were some of your speakers this year?Caterpillar CEO James Umpleby, Land O'Lakes CEO Beth Ford and Kohl's CEO Michelle Gass.Any new ideas?Making that content available digitally so people can access it remotely. How do you unwind?I'm a bath junkie. It's almost a ritual at the end of the day.On what do you splurge?Good food, wine and White + Warren cashmere slippers.
They are like walking on pillows.Your favorite app?Spotify. Music on demand is one of the greatest technological gifts of the decade.
